Red roses Many women, having received a gorgeous bouquet of roses as a gift, are eager to grow the same in their summer cottage or on their windowsill. According to experts, this is quite real and, moreover, not difficult. But before planting a rose from a bouquet, you will need to know all the subtleties of this process, since success will depend on seemingly insignificant details. We select cuttings

I would like to note right away that not all flowers are suitable for growing. To grow a rose from a stem of a bouquet, you must choose the right planting material:

  • Do not count on flowers brought from abroad. In order to extend their shelf life, Dutch roses are subjected to a very strong preservative treatment. Therefore, it is better to give preference to flowers grown in local greenhouses. A large percentage of rooting (up to 90%) is shown by hybrid tea, polyanthus, miniature and climbing varieties.
  • It is very difficult to grow a rose from cuttings of a bouquet that has stood in a pot of water for more than four days.
  • Too thick and completely green flexible stems are not suitable for germination. The best option would be a soft, slightly stiff stalk with one or two buds on top and one bud on the bottom.

Preparation of rose cuttings

In order to grow roses from cuttings of a bouquet, you will need to very carefully prepare the planting material. For this purpose, a 12-25 cm long stalk is formed from the stem, the lower cut of which has an angle of 45º and is located 1 cm further than the lower bud. The upper cut is made straight and is 0.5-1 cm away from the upper kidney.

After completing the formation, the cutting can be dipped for 12 hours in water with drugs dissolved in it to accelerate growth, or placed in aloe juice, which has the same properties.

After this time, dry the cutting and burn the upper part with brilliant green or potassium permanganate. It is advisable to dip the lower cut into the root, which will promote better rooting. To enhance the survival rate, all the lower leaves on it are removed, and the upper ones are cut by half or 1/3. The thorns, if any, are removed with a pruner.

Planting cuttings

Before planting a rose stalk from a bouquet, you need to prepare the soil for it. If planting is done indoors, then you can purchase a special earthen mixture containing all the necessary components. When rooting the cuttings in open ground, the soil in the garden bed should be fertile and light. This can be achieved by mixing humus, river sand, and deciduous and peat soil.

Planting a seedling is carried out so that its smallest part remains above the ground. This will allow the plant to avoid moisture loss. However, it is also not recommended to deepen it strongly: the upper buds should remain above the ground. Then pour the cuttings of roses and cover with a plastic bottle or a 1.5 liter jar to create your own microclimate. To keep the ground under them always moist, it is recommended to sprinkle the top layer of soil with sand 2-3 cm thick.

cuttings of roses in potatoesYou can grow a rose from the stem of a bouquet in one more original way. For this, potatoes are used. Before planting the seedling in the ground, it is stuck with the lower cut into the potato fruit, from which all the eyes are pre-cut. Next, the stalk in the potato is placed in the ground in the same way as in the previous method.

According to experienced growers, this option increases the chances of rooting several times, since the plant receives more necessary nutrients from the potato.

Care of cuttings

To grow a rose from the stem of a bouquet at the rooting stage requires special care. In the first 2 weeks, the seedling should receive abundant moisture. For this purpose, it is sprayed up to 5-7 times a day. However, the soil should remain moist, but not sticky. Further, such a manipulation can be reduced up to 3 times. Watering and spraying is carried out through the neck of the bottle.

The optimal temperature regime, at which roses from cuttings of a bouquet take root well, is 23-25 degrees. Also, do not forget about additional lighting. If the plant does not receive enough sunlight, then additional illumination is carried out with fluorescent lamps.

stalk with rootsAfter about 3-4 weeks, roots begin to appear at the cutting. From this point on, you can gradually accustom him to natural conditions. To do this, the coating is removed from the seedling first for 5 minutes, then for 10 minutes, and then the amount of time spent at room temperature gradually increases.

If the whole process is carried out correctly, then after a few years you can see a fragrant bush on your balcony or in a flower garden. Don't be discouraged if the cuttings are not rooted. Since a rose is a capricious plant, it may not work the first time. So try again and don't be afraid to take risks and experiment. Perhaps you will come up with your own growing method that is optimal for your conditions. Read about cuttings of roses!

Thanks for the detailed and clear recommendations. I tried many times to grow cuttings of roses from a bouquet for planting, and never succeeded. Probably, the material was unusable, or I did something wrong. I will definitely try again, and this time I will adhere to all the recommendations described in the article. By the way, I didn’t know that aloe juice has properties that stimulate plant growth. Where and how else can you use aloe juice?
