English roses - planting and care

English Rose Summer Song English roses are the most beautiful of all roses. This new variety appeared in the 80s of the previous century. They appeared thanks to the English breeder David Austin by crossing old roses with modern groups of hybrid tea roses and floribunda roses.

English roses borrowed a lot from old roses. Vintage roses do not have a wide range of colors. Their palette is limited to white, pale pink, lilac and purple. And they bloom only at the beginning of summer. But the heady aroma and harmonious shape of the bush are unmatched among roses. Vintage roses look great in gardens, parks, flower beds.

A huge range of colors of hybrid tea roses, chic bunches and repeated flowering of the floribunda species - all these best qualities have been absorbed by English roses. The simplicity and sophistication of delicate old roses, combined with new varieties, helped to create a type of rose that surpasses them in quality by several orders of magnitude. The harmonious union of the old and the modern - these are English roses.

The main advantages of English roses:

  • have an incomparable, unsurpassed aroma;
  • have a long flowering cycle up to 4 months;
  • contain the ability of uniform flowering throughout the bush from top to bottom with large inflorescences.

According to the shape of the flower, they are divided into types:

  • shallow bowl;
  • open bowl;
  • deep bowl;
  • pompon;
  • socket;
  • cross-shaped socket;
  • back-curved rosette.

Roses of this species, in different climatic zones, may show different abilities.

Roses of this class are photophilous like all roses, but they are also shade-resistant, 4-5 hours of sunshine a day is enough for them. It depends on the overcast, rainy climate of England.

Disadvantages of English roses:

  • during the period of prolonged rains, flowers of some varieties with a deep cupped shape cannot open, you have to help them manually;
  • young branches bend strongly under the weight of flowers, while losing their decorative effect;
  • weak re-flowering in some varieties.

Planting english roses

To grow an English rose, you don't need to be a great specialist. It is quite possible to land on your own, following simple rules.

Before planting, the roots of the rose are cut and soaked in water for a day. They make a hole 50x50, add humus, compost to it, mix everything with the ground and fill it with water. When planting, you need to pay attention to the place where the rootstock is grafted. The border of the stock should be buried 7-10 cm into the ground to avoid the formation of wild growth. After planting, the ground part of the bush is spud, for better rooting of the seedling.

Care

General rules for caring for roses also apply to English roses. These are: watering, weeding, pest control and fertilizer. Watering is done as the soil dries up, usually in the evening, at the rate of 5 liters of water per bush; for climbing species - 15 liters.

Before flowering, fertilizers containing nitrogen are applied, during flowering - phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Already in the summer, you need to prepare an English rose for wintering... The peculiarity of the wood structure of these roses is looser than that of other species, it contains more moisture, therefore it tolerates frost worse. Potash fertilizers are applied regularly to help the wood mature.

After the rain, the bushes must be shaken so that moisture does not linger on the buds, which leads to gray mold disease.If the stems are already affected, then it is necessary to remove the affected areas up to the upper developed kidney.

In addition, in damp weather, the buds do not bloom well - the upper petals dry out and do not allow it to open. Therefore, you need to manually help the bud to open by removing the top dry petals from it. Withered flowers are also removed from the bush, which gives an impetus for the formation of young buds.

The English rose needs pruning. All weak, underdeveloped, old, diseased stems are cut out mercilessly. Next, they begin to form a bush, depending on what requirements are imposed on it. If you need a small bush with large flowers, then the stems are shortened in half, and if a large bush with a huge number of buds is needed in the garden, then they are cut by a third. Climbing varieties of roses are pruned by 1/5 of the length. Pruning is in any case necessary, as it serves to form young, powerful shoots. For the winter, the English rose is covered with an air-dry method.
