Growing green onions on a windowsill

the onion grows on the windowsill Green onions are rich in vitamins, it is useful to eat them all year round, but when sprouting, onions give off an unpleasant odor. To get rid of the rotting smell, you need to properly grow onions on the windowsill. This can be done using hydroponic beds, or by growing chives in a 5 liter plastic bottle. Let's consider two methods in more detail.

Germination in a hydroponic garden

To make a hydroponic bed, you will need a plastic egg tray. The tray must be cut in two. Holes are cut at the bottom of the egg trays. The top of the tray becomes a pallet. The bulbs are matched to the size of the cells. Water is poured into the pallet, and then the lower part of the tray is placed on it. When the onion takes root into the water, the lower part of the egg tray is raised above the water, substituting supports from sticks or planks. It is necessary that only the roots touch the water. This will prevent the onions from rotting and the unpleasant odor will not spread.

The hydroponic bed is placed on the windowsill. Five bulbs that are closer to the window will develop faster. To harvest the entire crop at the same time, you need backlight. But you can also make a light reflector. The row closer to the window will receive more direct sunlight. Reflected sunlight will hit the back row.

In order to make a reflector of sunlight, you will need a two-liter tetra juice bag. The bottom of the box must be cut and opened so that the foil part is turned towards the light. A homemade reflector must be placed on the opposite side of the window.

In order to constantly get the harvest of green onions, onions are grown on the windowsill in two hydroponic beds, planting them at intervals of 10 days.

Growing in a plastic bottle

Cut holes in a 5 liter plastic bottle to fit the bulbs. Cut holes 5 cm from the bottom of the bottle. The next row of holes must be cut in a checkerboard pattern. Then the bulbs are placed in the holes. The first row of onions is covered with soil. This procedure is repeated cyclically until the entire bottle is filled with earth. The bottle is placed on the sill of the southwest window.

This method of growing allows you to get 30-35 green stems every 10 days.

To maximize yields, fill the bottle with a fertile mixture that can be made from peat, sand, and neutral soil. All three components are mixed in equal proportions.
