Choosing the time for planting anemone

I have long wanted to breed anemones in my house, and here in a flower shop I saw a bag of seeds. I brought it home, and then a neighbor came and awarded me three more tubers. There will now be a whole anemone flower bed in the country. I decided to hold the tubers until spring, since our winters are cold. Tell me when is it better to plant anemones and is it possible to sow seeds now?

anemones Compact bushes with carved foliage and delicate but large flowers, painted in various shades, are one of the first to appear in the spring on a flower bed from under the snow. These are anemones from the buttercup family. There are many types of anemones, differing both in color and shape of inflorescences, which can even be double, and in terms of flowering. Having planted several varieties on a flower bed that bloom in early spring, at the beginning and at the end of summer, you can create a composition that will delight the eye with charming flowering for a long time, despite a short period (on average, anemones bloom no more than three weeks).

Depending on the specific species, anemones can have both a fragile but fleshy cylinder-shaped rhizome and tubers.

Time when you can plant anemones, depends on what seed is used:

  • if these are seeds, it is better to sow them before winter;
  • rhizome and tuberous anemones are usually planted in spring.

Features of winter sowing of seedssowing anemone seeds

Sowing in autumn anemone avoids the laborious and time-consuming procedure of seed stratification, which is necessary to increase the germination rate. To do this, at the end of autumn, shallow containers must be filled with a loose substrate consisting of sand and peat. Before the onset of the first frost, sow seeds into the moistened soil mixture and lightly sprinkle them. It is impossible to deeply deepen, since the sprouts cannot break through to the surface.

Only freshly harvested seeds should be used for sowing.

Now the most interesting thing: the container with seeds should be taken out into the street and buried in the flower bed. From above, additionally cover it with fallen leaves. In early spring, seeds that have survived natural stratification by winter frosts will sprout. When the seedlings grow up, it will be possible to transplant it to a permanent place.

When growing an anemone by seed, three factors should be taken into account: firstly, the seeds have a very low germination capacity, secondly, this method is not suitable for hybrid varieties, since plants do not retain varietal characteristics, and thirdly, anemones grown from seeds will bloom only on third year.

Spring planting anemonetubers anemones

Rhizome varieties are best planted in spring, especially when an old plant is propagating. Delenki may not survive the autumn transplant. Tuberous species flower before spring planting is required to "wake up". To do this, they must be wrapped in a cloth abundantly moistened with a growth stimulant and placed in a bag for at least six hours. After the specified time, the tubers are ready for planting in the flower bed.

When planting tuberous anemones, the growing point should point upwards. It is on the flat side of the tuber.
