How to choose and plant a rose from the box correctly
Supermarkets have been supplying a wide variety of boxed roses since January. Local (not southern) or Dutch varieties adapt best to our conditions.
Hybrid tea plants are more demanding in terms of care and growing conditions.
- Pay attention to the quality of the seedlings. The root collar should not be tightly wrapped on top (in this case, the grafting may undermine). The trunk should be thick, the bark healthy and uniform.
- The buds should be dormant, but lively, firm, green (not brown, not black).
- The paraffin with which the plants are treated contributes to the retention of moisture and the rapid growth of the buds.
Some people choose plants with buds sprouted in January. They will not have enough light, the shoots will be weak. Such a seedling may die.
If it is not possible to store the rose at a temperature of less than 4-5 degrees (in the refrigerator or cellar), the plant is soaked and planted in the ground.
Grafted roses develop faster and bloom more magnificently. The seedlings should have a few ripe and woody green stems with healthy bark.
Soil preparation
The optimal soil composition for planting box roses:
- 2 parts of the top fertile layer of garden soil;
- 1 part humus;
- 1 part fine sand;
- 1 part peat;
- 1 part fine weathered clay.
If the soil on the site is heavy, clayey will need a drainage device.
When they brought the seedling home
When buying a rose in a box early, you need to properly save the seedling so that it does not die after planting in the ground.
After the seedling is brought home, it is examined. Remove the film, the soil under it should be moist, and the roots should be alive.
There are two options:
- leave the rose for storage in the refrigerator or cellar;
- plant in the ground.
Initial actions:
- Examine the roots, cut off the rotten parts.
- Remove the film, take moistened sphagnum moss (synthetic winterizer, sawdust), cover the roots, then wrap it in a film. Thanks to this, the roots breathe. Moss has a bactericidal effect and helps to moisten the soil.
- Put the rose in a cold place.
At +5 degrees, the plant begins to wake up. If you notice that the buds are sprouting, you need to spread the roots, lower the seedling in water for 7 hours, then plant it in the ground.
Watering with fungicides helps protect plants from fungal infections.
How to plant box-bought roses
Roses are planted out of a box in open ground in April or May. If the buds woke up earlier, you can plant roses from a box in a bucket or other container and put them on a balcony or terrace.
Dwarf and hybrid tea varieties are buried in the soil by 3 cm. ground cover roses and climbing ones are deepened by 5 cm.
Before planting a purchased rose, you need to think about where it will grow.
Plot requirement:
- sufficient illumination and air supply;
- wind protection;
- acidity with a PH level of 6-6.5;
- optimal side: south, south-east, south-west;
- soil fertility, fertilizers.
Roses grow poorly on sands and sandy loams.
Instructions on how to properly plant roses purchased in a store:
- The seedling is completely immersed in cold water for 6-7 hours. According to the instructions, growth stimulants are added.
- A pit is prepared, 50 cm wide and deep. A drainage layer is arranged.
- Add complex mineral fertilizers, humus.A layer of prepared soil is poured, roses are planted out of the box, all free space is covered with soil.
- Water abundantly.
- Cover with a mulch layer of humus, sawdust or bark from trees.
At first, the plant is shaded from the sun. It is necessary to regularly water and fertilize roses, remove weeds in a timely manner and treat them with protective compounds against diseases and pests.
The seedling takes root better in cool, damp weather. The plant should not be brought out into direct sunlight. It needs to be gradually hardened by taking it outside in the morning for a short time.
Planting roses from a box on the balcony
If it is not possible to store seedlings at temperatures less than +5 degrees, the buds will begin to germinate. In this case, roses are planted in a container and displayed on a glazed balcony in the shade.
The volume of the pot is calculated so that the root system completely fills the pot until it is planted in the ground.
At temperatures below 0 degrees, the plant is brought into the room.
Before planting roses bought in a box in open soil, they are hardened. Beginning in April, the windows are opened briefly every day, gradually increasing the time of access to the plant for fresh air. Then they leave the windows wide open, not closing even at night.
Inexperienced gardeners sometimes lose roses bought in a box and planted in open ground. This is due to the fact that they do not know how to choose the right seedling, store and plant it. If you follow the recommendations, the flower will delight you with its beauty and aroma for many years.
