Planting heather in heavy soils

planting heather How to supplement conifers on an alpine slide or in a rockery? Precisely landing heather is the most relevant option for such compositions. Its branched, tall (30-70 cm) and evergreen bushes will harmoniously fit into the created idyll.

In combination with spruce and juniper, both light and dark varieties will look unforgettable. To see all the beauty of culture, they buy it in the fall. Then you can skillfully choose the color and shape to combine with other "neighbors".

Autumn planting of heather

The acidic soil is the native habitat of the culture. At the same time, the shrub takes root on dry sandy soils or moist peat soils. Calcareous earth can destroy it. At first, the bush is sick for a long time. And although new shoots appear in him, they will not be so strongly developed as to become independent. When the old branches begin to fall off, then the young simply will not have enough food. Therefore, decent conditions are created for him:

  • a small fossa, since the heather has a shallow root system;
  • for clayey places, an armful of pine needles / bark is placed at the bottom of the hole (coniferous litter significantly acidifies the earth);
  • the seedling is covered with the prepared substrate: coniferous / garden soil, river sand (2 parts) and peat (3 hours);
  • planted flush with the ground;
  • mulch the planting site;
  • watered with 5-6 liters of water.

At the foot alpine slide place undersized varieties, and tall exhibits between slender trees. Shrubs are planted in late September or throughout October. In all other cases, choose one of the days of April or May. Preference is given, of course, to the spring planting of heather. Then the plant will be able to take root and grow stronger.

This procedure is carried out if the soil is heavy and unsuitable for the shrub The sand will create a kind of drainage that will not allow the water to stagnate. Peat saturates the soil with essential components. Since the rhizome is fully formed in the fall, they are transshipment, not transplant. In this case, you do not need to shake off the temporary substrate from the seedling.

In some cases, it is recommended to water the bush with acidified water. Add vinegar or lemon juice to it.

Three important conditions

Often, the bush releases too long shoots. There is no need to trim them. You can just dig in the layer near the mother plant. A year later, a new seedling will grow in this place, which is dug up and transferred to another site. In caring for heather, it is important to remember three points, he:

  • likes moderate humidity;
  • does not tolerate drying out;
  • adapted to sunny as well as shady areas.

Nevertheless, you should always closely monitor your charge. After all, the climatic conditions in each region are different. Even if the planting of heather is done correctly and in the right place, there are dangers from pests as well as diseases.
