The most hardy and useful plant is the date palm

date palm Among the wide variety of indoor palms, it is worth highlighting the date palm. Compared to its relatives, this species is distinguished by its special endurance: it rarely gets sick and is practically not attacked by pests. The flower is often used for landscaping offices and private houses due to its beautiful bright leaves and has more than one and a half dozen varieties.

What is a plant?

Hearing the name "date palm”, Many probably imagined delicious sweet dried fruits of brown color with a long bone inside. And we were right - it is this palm that gives us useful fruits, more precisely, one of its types.

All types of date palms are characterized by a thick trunk from which long leaves with narrow "feathers" grow.

Popular types

In indoor floriculture, the following types of dates (palms) are most often found:

  • canary;
  • Robelena;
  • palmate.

It is from the finger date that the useful harvest is removed. Another characteristic feature of the variety is its trunk - it gradually becomes bare and becomes "bald" in the lower part. Because of this, the palm tree loses its decorative effect a little.

How to care for a flower?

In order for the foliage of a date palm to grow thick and lush, it needs good lighting. It is worth noting that it grows very slowly, and the first true leaves, in which the plate is not whole, but feathery, are formed only at the 4th year of life. The southern side of the house is the most suitable place for a palm tree. Young plants can be placed on the windowsill, and large specimens can be placed on the floor by the window. To prevent the flower from growing one-sided, the pot must be periodically turned towards the sun.

In the summer, it is good to take the tub out into the garden; in the fresh air, the leaves of the palm tree acquire a more intense color.

In winter, it is important not to allow the room temperature to be below 14 degrees, while watering it once a week with warm water is enough. Since spring, the frequency of watering is increased, otherwise spots from a lack of moisture will appear on the leaves. You can also spray the leaves or wash them in the shower.

Under natural conditions, the height of a palm tree can reach 25 m, while indoors its dimensions are limited by the height of the ceiling.

The date palm is fed twice a month with special fertilizers for palm trees. Every year, young bushes are transferred to a larger pot, renewing the soil with them.
