A vegetable garden on a long narrow section: how to equip?

In the fall, we bought a summer cottage. We are planning to set up a small vegetable garden there, but there is a small problem - the site has the shape of an elongated rectangle. Tell me how you can arrange a garden on a long narrow area with your own hands?

Owners of land plots that have the correct, square shape can only be envied. After all, there are practically no problems with the location of residential and utility buildings on it, as well as a garden and a vegetable garden. It is much more difficult in this matter for those who have an elongated section. The width of such plots generally does not exceed 20 m, which makes you think about its layout, especially if you also need to fit garden beds there.

However, you should not be afraid of difficulties, because it is, in principle, not very difficult to equip a garden with your own hands on a long narrow area. The main thing is to adhere to certain recommendations, with which you can visually expand the property and plan not only a vegetable garden, but also a small garden.

General recommendations for planning a narrow sectionnarrow section

To divert attention from the small width of the site, it is recommended to divide it into three zones and arrange each as an independent territory:

  1. Living area (house, gazebo, small pool).
  2. Place for plantings (garden, vegetable garden).
  3. Economic zone (outbuildings).

For garden beds in a narrow area, leave the sunny side.

Design options for beds in a narrow areaschema

When arranging a garden and a vegetable garden on a long plot, you should not use the method of planting plantings in a row along the plot. This method will visually make the site even narrower. Better to apply non-standard solutions, for example, planting plants in a circle.

They look beautiful and do not attract attention to problem areas of the site:

  • french beds;
  • multilevel beds;
  • high beds located diagonally or across the site.

Paths between groups of plants should also be made not of a straight shape, but winding or diagonal so that they "break" the long line of the site.

French bedsfrench beds

Such beds are made in the form of a group of clear geometric shapes, separated by paths of irregular shape. The edges of the beds are limited by a border, which is also decorative. You can supplement them with elements of landscape design (various sculptures).

When planning French beds in a narrow area, it is better to make them in the form of a circle or an oval.

Multilevel bedsmultilevel beds

A long section can be divided into tiers-steps and used for garden plants. And if you build separate beds for 2 or more "floors", this will not only save space, but also increase the landing area.

High bedshigh beds

Bulk beds located along the site will help break it up into fragments. Moreover, they are easy to care for. If you arrange high bed diagonally, you get a rather extraordinary solution for planning a vegetable garden in a narrow area.
