Is it possible to plant an orchid in an opaque pot: expert opinion

Tell me, is it possible to plant an orchid in an opaque pot? I am just a beginner lover of these plants and so far there are only two phalaenopsis in my collection. One grows in a plastic pot, especially for orchids. The second beauty has been in an old store-bought pot for several years. The rosette has grown a lot, there are many aerial roots hanging around - I think it's time to increase the volume of the vessel. But in our store I just can't find transparent flowerpots, there are only colored plastic pots. Can you plant a flower in such a pot?

is it possible to plant an orchid in an opaque pot You've probably noticed more than once that orchids are sold in a transparent container through which the roots can be seen. Given the epiphytic nature of these plants, it is this container that is most suitable for them. However, there are many other flowerpots labeled "for orchids" on the shelves in the store. Among them are heavy ceramic pots, multi-colored plastic containers, and even glass containers. What to choose for a spectacular beauty, and which flowerpot will suit her best?

Benefits of transparent pots

In containers, the walls of which are translucent, orchids are easier to grow for obvious reasons:

  1. It is clearly visible in what state substratewhether it is dry or still wet. This allows you to establish a competent watering regime and avoid waterlogging.
  2. If the flower starts to have problems, they can also be noticed even in the initial stages. Both emerging pests and rotting roots will be visible through the walls. This makes it possible to intervene in time and prevent the death of the orchid.

Most often they sell transparent plastic or glass pots. Better to give preference to the first. The latter are much more expensive and keep the heat worse if there are frequent temperature changes in the room.

plastic orchid potsAccording to the opinion of experienced "orchid growers", based on the long-term practice of breeding epiphytes, they can be grown in an opaque container. However, there are three conditions:

  • mandatory presence of drainage holes;
  • correct substrate;
  • adjusted irrigation mode.

For planting orchids in opaque flowerpots, it is better to use large bark. The remaining voids between its pieces will allow the roots of the plant to breathe. In addition, sunlight will have at least some opportunity to penetrate the roots and provide photosynthesis.

orchid in a ceramic potThe main danger of opaque containers is that they hide the state of the root system. In such vases, the flower is easy to overflow, which will lead to its death. If you opted for a cute plastic green pot, you can plant your phalaenopsis there. But in this case, use a suitable substrate and adjust the watering. You can also plant it in a ceramic pot, but then there is a risk that the roots will grow to the walls. When transplanting, they will inevitably have to be torn off, injuring the flower. Therefore, if you use opaque flowerpots, then let them be plastic.
