The troubles of the summer resident in the beds and in the greenhouse in December

When winter comes, some plants need extra cover. It is good if, with its beginning, a thick layer of snow covers the ground. In this case, it is advisable to keep it in the beds with the help of a dug furrow. You can also construct special obstacles from cut branches of garden plants.

Unfortunately, December does not always please summer residents with an abundance of white precipitation. Therefore, they have to work hard to create an artificial shelter for garden plants planted in the winter.

For example, cover carrots, garlic or radishes with a thick layer of dead leaves. And cover the garden parsley with dry grass or needles.

However, it should not be forgotten that empty beds also need protection. Otherwise, frost and winter winds will destroy the topsoil, and the land will lose its fertility.

December is the best time for such work. To preserve the fertile soil layer, it should be mulch... To do this, use:

• fallen leaves of garden plants;
• knocked down straw;
• sawdust;
• stalks of garden crops;
• peat.

The protective layer of coarse mulch should be no less than 10 cm. It is applied to the weed-free, loosened soil in December, when all vegetation is removed from the beds.

Such a cover wonderfully permeates air and moisture, which has a beneficial effect on the top layer of the soil.

If December is warm enough, you can sow mustard, oats or wheat in the beds. They serve not only as green fertilizers for the earth, but also protect the soil from frost.

Greenhouse preparation for the new season

When December comes, it's time to start preparing your greenhouse for the new season. First of all, it is necessary to analyze the state of the greenhouse structure, and then start work. The damaged film covering is removed from the structure to be destroyed or used for other economic purposes.

Since no one knows what lies ahead, in December we need to try to strengthen the frame of the greenhouse structure. If the roof is sloping on it, then it will not suffer from a large amount of snow. Additional supports can be made of wood and can be securely installed inside the greenhouse. The next stage is preparing the soil for planting vegetables. It starts with cleaning the greenhouse.

There are many different pests and fungi in last year's grass and vegetable tops. If left unchecked, they will infect healthy plants in the spring, which will affect yields.

All vegetable waste is removed by hand so as not to miss anything. The top layer of soil, about 5 cm, is removed with a shovel and carried out.

Fold it in the allotted area and sprinkle it with lime. This procedure will help rid the soil of pests that hide in it for the winter. And it will also lead to the death of many weeds that harm cultivated plants. This soil layer is stored outdoors for about 1 year, after which it is reintroduced into the greenhouse.

Once the soil has been prepared and the structure has been repaired, it's time to think about seeds. It is important to check the quality of the planting material left over from the last season. If it is not enough for planting, it is wise to purchase a fresh batch in December. During this period, seeds are much cheaper than in January or February. In addition, it does not hurt to stock up on various fertilizers for vegetables and pesticides from pests.

If greens are planted in the greenhouse for the winter, it is covered with straw or sawdust to protect it from frost.

Roots intended for forcing are planted in containers in December. Thanks to this, fresh and healthy greens will be on the table in early spring. Sometimes drip irrigation is used to water the plants under cover. In early December, it is advisable to remove it, wash it and take it to the shed.

Various water tanks must also be emptied of liquid so that they do not suffer from frost. In addition to this work, it is important to prepare seedling containers. Subsequently, this will help not to waste time, but calmly engage in planting.

If the summer resident tries to complete all the December preparations in time, then in the spring he will receive a great reward - the first fruits. And the well-groomed land will "sleep peacefully" under a snowy winter blanket.
