Description of the plant
Like all Kampsis, Madame Gelen is a fast-growing perennial vine. For a year, a young seedling can stretch up to 2 m in height. The height of an adult bush, which is regularly cut off, averages 4 m. Along the entire length of the shoots, except for the lignified lower part, beautiful carved leaves are densely located. Usually there are an odd number of them. The leaf plate is complex-pinnate, with an unpaired number of oval serrated leaflets. The first pair is usually lighter, and towards the end of the leaf the “feathers” become dark green in color. The entire leaf is quite large, up to 40 cm in length.
On the shoots of vines, over time, a kind of antennae appear, more like small roots. With them, she clings to the support and crawls along it.
In the third year of life, Kampsis blooms in the middle of summer. Flowering lasts until the arrival of autumn. Sometimes the last bud opens in October if it's warm. The large buds are like bells with a long neck. They are orange, but with a red tint inside. The length of one bell is 8 cm, and the diameter of an open flower is almost equal to its size. At the end of flowering, Kampsis sets fruits in the form of long capsule pods. Inside them are flat seeds.
