What do we know about planting and caring for garden calla lilies?

If you decide to decorate your garden with flowers such as calla lilies, there are few rules for planting and nursing outdoors. In general, this plant is quite unpretentious and does not require elaborate care. However, some of the tricks that will help make the calla even more graceful and beautiful are still worth taking a closer look at.

Calla is one of the most attractive plants for gardeners, which is distinguished by the presence of elongated, slightly wavy flowers. His homeland is Africa, but for a long time this flower has adorned garden plots all over the world. In Russia, it is often called a wedding plant. With her help, interiors are decorated, bouquets for brides are created and much more.

For a novice florist care calla lilies in the garden may seem like a very complicated process, but with experience it will become clear that this is a non-capricious plant. First you need to decide on the choice of soil. It should be acidic enough. The best option includes the following components:

The purchased tubers must be laid out on a tray, and then left for some time in a special place. The optimum air temperature is from +5 to + 7 ° С. Many growers recommend storing planting material in the refrigerator, while not forgetting to turn it over regularly.

Already in April, the finished tubers should be planted in a container, and then sprinkled with some soil (no more than 3 cm thick). At this stage, the air temperature must be at least + 20 ° C.

Please note that on each planting tuber there is a tubercle, which is its top, from where the arrows-peduncles are released. Such tubers need sufficient space. Do not water them right away, let them rest and only after a few days you can moisten the soil.

If you want to grow healthy and beautiful calla lilies, planting and caring in the open field should be started at the beginning of summer. The optimum depth of the holes is about 10 cm. For this it is recommended to choose extremely sunny places in the garden. Shaded areas will not work, as this will have a bad effect on the growth rate of the flower. There should be no drafts either.

If you notice that the calla leaves do not tolerate the scorching rays of the sun and burns appear on them, then try to shade them in the midday hours.

How to care for calla lilies?

In most cases, calla lilies independently cope with pests and do not have a tendency to get sick. Otherwise, they require routine care.During the period when the tubers are still beginning to form their root system, watering should be abandoned. It can be resumed only after the first shoots appear. Make sure that no water gets onto the tubers themselves. Regular watering begins with the formation of full-fledged leaves. Watering frequency depends on rainfall and air temperature. On average, it will be enough to water the calla lilies no more than once every 4-7 days.
