How to determine the planting depth and what does it depend on?

Planting lilies on a flower bed, we all dream of seeing gorgeous multi-colored buds as soon as possible. However, quite often the bulbs take root quickly and even build up the aerial part quite well, but flowering does not occur. The most common reason for this phenomenon is improper fit, in particular, too deep a hole. "Buried" in the ground lily it just tries to get to the surface, and then it is no longer up to flowering. But in this case, there will be more children and stem roots too. On the other hand, if the planting hole is too shallow, the lilies begin to ache, and again they do not want to bloom. Today we will tell you how to plant lilies in order to protect them from diseases and see the first flowering as early as possible.

Determine the optimal planting depth of the bulbs

The generally accepted rule is planting lilies in holes the depth of which is equal to the height of the bulb itself multiplied by 3. This rule applies to medium to small bulbs. Large specimens with a diameter of more than 12 cm deepen to 25 cm.

But it should be borne in mind that in addition to the size of the bulbs, the planting depth is also influenced by:

1. Soil composition. It is better not to deepen even large bulbs into heavy clay soil, otherwise they will not be able to get out for a long time. But in sandy soil, on the contrary - it should be planted deeper.
2. Lily species. Varieties with high, powerful peduncles or well-developed stem roots are recommended to be planted deeper than generally accepted norms.

The smallest planting of lilies, which have a rosette of leaves above the soil. The hole for them must be made no more than 2 cm in depth, because the tops of the scales should be at the very surface of the soil. This applies to such lilies as snow-white, terracotta, Chalntcedony, Catsby and Testaceum.

How to plant lilies: possible planting patterns

So, we decided on the depth, now we need to make a sand cushion in the center of the hole, mixing sand with a small amount of ash. It will protect the roots from decay. It remains only to "plant" the bulbs on the pillows, press in slightly, spread the roots on the sides and cover with earth. Planted lilies must be well watered and mulched.

In order not to lose them, you can stick a twig next to each, thus marking it.

As for the layout of the landings, one of three tape landing options is most often used:

• one line (15 cm - between the bulbs and 50 cm - between the lines);
• two lines (25 cm - between the bulbs, the same amount - between the lines and 70 cm - between the ribbons);
• three lines (15 cm - between the bulbs, the rest - as with a two-line planting).

The second option is used when planting medium-sized lilies, and the third is used when planting low varieties.
