How to revive discounted alocasia and propagate it with nodules

discounted alocasia In flower shops, you can often find discounted alocasia. Due to the fact that plants have certain defects (loss of decorative appearance, damaged or fallen leaves), they are sold at a more affordable price. This often happens if the plants are on the shelves for a very long time without proper care or transplantation. However, this does not mean at all that the flower can already be written off. Damage in the upper part of the bush may not affect the rhizomes, and then it is quite possible to get several healthy bushes from one frail plant.

How to check if alocasia is alive?

Even if a flower with one yellowed leaf was purchased, its root system may not yet be completely damaged, and if you are completely lucky, then nodules will appear in the depths of the pot.

To check the condition of alocasia, you should:

  1. Wait until the soil dries out a little (this will make it easier to clear the flower from the ground).
  2. Remove the bush from the flowerpot.
  3. Gently pick off all the substrate from the roots.
  4. Remove all damaged tissue.

In most cases, a part of the root system of alocasia turns out to be alive, and tubers of different sizes are found between the roots, which must be separated. They will serve as material for the propagation of a flower.

Alocasia transplant

The bush, cleared of old soil and rotten residues, can be placed in a new substrate if it has at least a few healthy roots. Over time in the nutrient soil alocasia will begin to grow again and may even form babies.

For planting, use a special universal substrate, while the stem should not be deeply buried.

Planting tubers

alocasia nodule

Small nodules must be planted separately. At the initial stages, they will not need a lot of space, so for the first time, instead of a flowerpot, you can use small plastic cups with a capacity of 50 or 100 ml (depending on the size of the tuber).

Fill the glass with earth and place the onion side up. Deepen it a little (not completely, but so that the sprout looks slightly out) and sprinkle with a thin layer of soil.

Place the cups with nodules in the greenhouse, for example, put them in a tray with a lid, or simply cover them with foil on top until germination.
